The Meghalaya High Court on Monday upheld the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in the state last year.

A single-judge bench of Justice W Diengdoh dismissed a criminal petition filed by the Meghalaya government seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Sonam by a trial court on April 27.

In its order, the high court questioned the manner in which the grounds of arrest had been prepared by the investigating agency.

“It is evident that such preparation was made without any application of mind… and nowhere is found any specific allegation or information as to what are the actual charges against her," the court observed.

“If this is the manner in which the intimation of the grounds of arrest is made, the same reflects a total non-application of judicious mind on the part of the arresting agency," it said.

The court held that there were no grounds to invoke its inherent powers to cancel the bail granted by the trial court and dismissed the state’s petition.

Sonam, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, was arrested in June 2025 in connection with the death of her husband, businessman Raja Raghuvanshi.

The couple had gone missing while visiting Sohra in Meghalaya on May 23, 2025. Raja’s body was later recovered from a deep gorge on June 2.

According to the police, Sonam conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband for financial gain. The case is currently under trial.
