Exhibits made with over nine tonnes of hill plantation crops commemorating the contribution of fishing communities to the State were the theme of the second annual Hill Plantation Crops show that began at the Kattery Park in Coonoor on Friday.
The three-day event was inaugurated by the Ooty MLA, M. Bhojarajan. According to officials from the State Horticulture Department, a total of 10 exhibits were made with crops such as tea, coffee, betel, cashew, coconut, palmyra, cocoa, oil palm and areca nuts. They were made to resemble women in boats, anchor and oar, conch, a light house and the coastal map of Tamil Nadu.
Officials said that a total of nine tonnes of produce was used in the making of the exhibits, which were themed around the contribution of fisherwomen to the State and local communities’ economies.
Apart from the exhibits, various district-level Horticulture Departments also set up their own stalls and exhibited produce from across the state. Competitions are also being held for four prizes for farmers growing plantation crops.
The Nilgiris Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, visited the second plantation crops show after its inauguration. She appealed to local residents, tourists and farmers to visit the show, which is to be held till Sunday.
