Hindustan Zinc’s Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Becomes India’s First Zinc Mark Site

UDAIPUR (India CSR): Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and among the top ten global silver producers, announced a key milestone. Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter (CLZS) achieved Zinc Mark validation, becoming the first site in India to be assessed as meeting the Zinc Mark Criteria under the Copper Mark Assurance Process. This recognition follows a comprehensive review of CLZS’s Independent Assessment Report by The Copper Mark, which confirmed the competence of the independent assessors and validated that the assessment process and findings were conducted in line with the Copper Mark Assurance Process and Criteria Guide.

The outcome reflects CLZS’s consistent implementation of robust policies and responsible operating practices aligned with globally benchmarked environmental, social, and governance standards.

The Zinc Mark, governed by The Copper Mark, is an internationally recognized assurance framework that independently assesses sitelevel performance against robust environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. These include benchmarks across emissions, energy and water efficiency, waste management, bio-diversity management, worker safety, human rights, stakeholder engagements and ethical business practices. The achievement comes amid growing global emphasis on responsible sourcing and traceability. As demand for responsibly produced metals continues to rise, driven by the global energy transition and infrastructure development, Zinc Mark validation reinforces CLZS’s credibility as a responsible contributor to the manufacturing ecosystem.

The Copper Mark and its metalspecific Zinc Mark framework follow a multistakeholder governance approach aimed at promoting responsible production of critical materials. As part of this, certified sites demonstrate strong performance not only in operational efficiency but also in positively impacting communities and respecting human rights. These certifications go beyond ESG ratings by validating performance at the operational level and promoting continuous progress.

The Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter’s achievement reflects Hindustan Zinc’s broader and deeply embedded sustainability commitment, underpinned by ambitious targets across decarbonisation, water positivity, and biodiversity conservation.

This sustainability leadership has received global recognition, with Hindustan Zinc being named the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. As India’s first mining company to join the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM), Hindustan Zinc continues to align with globally benchmarked best practices while strengthening India’s position as a credible and responsible producer in the global metals value chain.
