Bayern Munich’s injury crisis could hand 16-year-old Leonard Prescott a shock historic Champions League debut against Atalanta, with all four senior goalkeepers sidelined.

If you like your Champions League drama served with a dash of chaos, Bayern Munich have a story for you.

Heading into their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 second leg against Atalanta BC, Bayern’s goalkeeping department has been wiped out by injuries — leaving manager Vincent Kompany facing an extraordinary selection dilemma.

The Bavarians are already without first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who is sidelined with a calf strain. Backup stopper Jonas Urbig is also a doubt after suffering a concussion in the first leg.

Things then went from bad to worse over the weekend.

Third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich stepped in during Bayern’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Bayer Leverkusen — only to suffer a muscle bundle tear that could sideline him for up to six weeks, according to reports.

Fourth-choice option Leon Klanac is also unavailable due to a thigh injury.

Enter The 16-year-old American

That leaves Bayern potentially turning to 16-year-old goalkeeper Leonard Prescott.

If selected, Prescott would make his senior debut at just 16 years and 176 days old — becoming the youngest goalkeeper in Champions League history and the eighth-youngest player ever to appear in the competition.

The towering 1.96-metre keeper joined Bayern in 2023 after developing in the youth system of 1. FC Union Berlin.

Born in New York City to a German mother and American father, Prescott grew up in Berlin and has already represented Germany at the youth level.

A Rare Situation

Fortunately for Kompany, Bayern carry a comfortable 6-1 aggregate lead into the second leg against Atalanta.

Still, the situation highlights just how quickly a squad can be stretched thin.

With another teenager, Jannis Bartl, likely on the bench, Bayern may head into a Champions League knockout tie with two teenage goalkeepers as their only options.
