A 28-year-old HIV-positive man from Madhya Pradesh has been arrested for allegedly murdering a factory worker and is suspected of forcing nearly 50 people into sexual acts over the past few years, police said.
The accused was arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of a factory worker whose body was found on 24 May in Bhopal.
According to police, the accused allegedly targeted men late at night on the streets of the Madhya Pradesh capital.
Investigators believe the accused managed to evade law enforcement for years because many of the alleged victims did not approach the police, reportedly due to fear, shame or social stigma.
He has been booked under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Katara Hills police station Town Inspector Sunil Dubey said the accused told investigators that he had repeatedly sexually assaulted the deceased after offering to help him find a good hotel, according to the Hindustan Times.
“When the deceased threatened to file a police complaint, he hit him three times with a stone and killed him. He took the deceased’s mobile phone and later sold it," Dubey said.
Police traced the accused’s location through their investigation, leading to his arrest.
Following the arrest, police said they are trying to identify other men who may have allegedly been sexually assaulted by the accused and could have been exposed to HIV.
Additional Commissioner of Police Rajnish Kashyap said the accused was also active in an LGBTQ community group and allegedly concealed his HIV-positive status while targeting men.
“He said he was never caught because people were too ashamed to report him to the police, while some engaged with him voluntarily. Police are now trying to identify them," Kashyap said.
