Yemen’s Houthi rebels said Israeli air strikes targeted the rebel-held capital Sanaa as AFP reported the sound of powerful explosions.

“Israeli aggression on the capital Sanaa," the Houthis’ al-Masirah television said in a statement posted on Telegram, without giving further details.

The extent of the damage or casualties from the reported strikes was not immediately clear.

The Iran-backed Houthi movement, which controls Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, has in recent months launched drone and missile attacks against Israel and commercial shipping in the Red Sea, declaring solidarity with Palestinians amid the war in Gaza.
