Flight tracking data showed flights rapidly clearing Iranian space and rerouting after the United States and Israel carried out coordinated military strikes against Tehran on Saturday. FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES

A video posted by flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 captured numerous aircraft quickly rerouting away from Iranian airspace, leaving vast stretches of the country’s skies noticeably empty shortly after the strikes.

Iranian authorities quickly shut their airspace after Israel launched pre-emptive strikes on Saturday morning, forcing flights to switch to alternate routes. Flightradar24 showed a large number of flights going over neighbouring countries while Iranian skies were deserted as tensions escalated.

Earlier today, Israel said it launched pre-emptive strikes on Iran to neutralise perceived threats from Tehran. Lt Col Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesman, said in a briefing that Israel has identified “a sharp acceleration" in Iran’s missile programme.

The United States also launched airstrikes at Iran as part of Operation Epic Fury, targeting members of the top Iranian leadership. The joint US-Israeli strikes targeted ranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian were both targeted but the result of the strikes was not clear.

Tehran responded by launching missiles at Israel. Explosions also rang out in nearby oil-producing Gulf Arab countries, which said they had intercepted missiles from Iran after Tehran warned it would strike the region if it was attacked.

In a video on social media, US President Donald Trump confirmed that “the US has begun major combat operations in Iran." He claimed Iran has continued to develop its nuclear programme and plans to develop missiles to reach the US and urged the Iranian people to rise up against the regime.

Trump had built up a vast US military presence in the region to try to force Tehran to make concessions in the nuclear talks. He said the “massive" operation was intended to ensure Tehran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.
