The US government’s decision to impose export controls on Anthropic’s most advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, has sent shockwaves through the artificial intelligence industry and sparked questions about the Trump administration’s approach to regulating the technology.
Days after the company released the AI models to the public, the Department of Commerce imposed export controls, barring foreign nationals from using the technology and prompting the company to suspend both systems for all users.
The commerce department decided to take action after another company claimed it could jailbreak Mythos, prompting alarms over possible national security risks. The official said the AI models need to remain locked down until the US government’s national security apparatus was bolstered enough to ward off threats, which could take a few weeks.
What Is Anthropic Doing?
A person told the Financial Times that Anthropic was given 90 minutes to comply with the government order and was not provided with detailed concerns before it was issued. The company has rushed a senior technical team to Washington to contain the fallout over the weekend.
According to the report, Amazon researchers discovered a potential “jailbreak" in Fable 5 that could be used to obtain information about software security vulnerabilities. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reportedly expressed broader concerns about the capabilities of frontier AI models, rather than issues specific to Anthropic.
However, Anthropic has disputed the administration’s targeting of its models, arguing that the capability identified is not unique and can be demonstrated in rival systems, including those developed by OpenAI.
A person close to Anthropic said it was working closely with the government to find common ground and work out the next steps.
Why Has Anthropic Been Targeted?
What has raised questions about the government’s targeting of Anthropic is that it does not target its rival OpenAI, whose AI models have demonstrated comparable capabilities.
This comes after the AI company clashed with the Trump administration over AI regulation and its use in domestic surveillance. The Pentagon has named Anthropic as a supply-chain risk to national security, which has sparked a legal dispute.
“Three months ago, the Department of War kicked Anthropic out of our building—forever. Every passing day proves why that was the right move," said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Meanwhile, the European Commission, which recently gained access to Anthropic’s latest models, said it was assessing the implications of the directive on its citizens.
