Race weekends remain especially hard. In a recent Instagram post, Samantha described the strange pull of still watching from home. "I still catch myself looking for his name on the leaderboard," she wrote, adding that the ache of Kyle's absence hits every time another race approaches.

She balanced that grief with gratitude for the NASCAR community, thanking fans, fellow drivers' wives and close friends for carrying her family through what she called the hardest weeks of her life. Samantha singled out the Coca-Cola 600, held just days after Kyle's death, where drivers wore his No. 8 gear during introductions. Watching her son's reaction meant everything to her, she said, describing how Brexton lit up with joy each time a driver walked out wearing his father's shirt.

Samantha revealed in a July 9 Instagram post that she and the children have started a new ritual: painting rocks in Kyle's memory and leaving them in places that mattered to their family. The family has already placed rocks in a handful of meaningful spots. One went to an In-N-Out location, tied to a running joke from their travels.

Kyle would grin and say "you know the rules" whenever the family landed on the West Coast, prompting a chorus of "first stop, In-N-Out!" Another rock made its way to Idaho, a nod to hiking trips Kyle would plan for Samantha even though, by her own admission, hiking was never really his thing.

Kyle's brother, fellow NASCAR driver and Hall of Famer Kurt Busch, remains close with the family, and the wider racing community has continued to check in through meals, cards and quiet support during the family's toughest days.NASCAR has confirmed a free public memorial service honoring Kyle's life and legacy for October 9 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, held after that day's Craftsman Truck Series race. It falls the same weekend as the Cup Series race at the same track, likely drawing a large crowd of fans looking to pay their respects to a driver who remains the winningest in NASCAR history. For Samantha and her children, the little painted rocks scattered across meaningful places may end up being just as lasting a tribute.
