Did Israeli intelligence played a critical supporting role in the high-stakes US mission to rescue a downed American pilot on Sunday?

Here’s what we know so far.

Who was the US crew member? Why was he stuck in Iran?

An Air Force Colonel, serving as a Weapon Systems Officer (WSO), was the crew member rescued on April 5, 2026, after being stranded for approximately 36 to 48 hours.

His F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down by Iranian air defenses on Friday, April 3. While the pilot of the jet was rescued shortly after the crash, the Colonel was forced to eject deep “behind enemy lines" in the treacherous mountains of southern Iran.

He remained stranded while evading capture by Iranian forces who were reportedly “getting closer and closer by the hour".

President Trump announced the rescue on Truth Social, hailing it as “one of the most daring search and rescue operations in U.S. history". He stated that he directed the US military to send “dozens of aircraft" armed with the “most lethal weapons in the world" to retrieve the airman.

Trump confirmed the airman was “SAFE and SOUND," noting that while he “sustained injuries," he would be “just fine". He described the airman as a “brave warrior" and praised the “amazing show of bravery and talent" by the rescue teams. Trump linked the success to his broader conflict strategy, warning Iran that “all Hell will reign down" if they do not meet his deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Monday.

Where was he hiding?

Multiple sources, including Iranian military officials, identified an abandoned airstrip in southern Isfahan as the primary site used for the extraction operation. The airman was hiding in a mountain crevice to evade capture by Iranian forces. During his evasion, he reportedly hiked up a 7,000-foot ridgeline to distance himself from the original crash site and avoid search teams.

While the rescue concluded in Isfahan, Iranian search efforts and U.S. operations were also concentrated in the neighbouring Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces, according to The New York Times.

Reports from the BBC geolocated wreckage from the operation to a mountainous area approximately 50km southeast of the city of Isfahan.

What was the CIA’s disinformation campaign? Did it help?

The airman was stranded for approximately 36 hours in treacherous terrain while being hunted by Iranian forces.

The CIA conducted a disinformation campaign within Iran, spreading false word that the airman had already been rescued and was moving overland. This tactic successfully misled Iranian search teams.

Two US transport planes (MC-130Js) became immobilised at a temporary airstrip during the operation. US forces destroyed the aircraft on the ground before evacuating to prevent sensitive technology from falling into Iranian hands.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz cited the operation as a testament to the “close cooperation" between the US and Israeli militaries during the ongoing conflict, according to the Times Of Israel.

How did Israel help the US op?

While US Navy SEAL Team 6 and other special operations forces executed the ground recovery, Reuters quoted an Israeli security official as saying that Israel’s “crucial intelligence assistance" was instrumental in helping US teams pinpoint the location of the airman, who was hiding in a remote mountain crevice in the southern Isfahan province.

To facilitate the rescue, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) halted its own air attacks and postponed strikes in specific regions of Iran. This ensured that US rescue aircraft could operate without the risk of accidental engagement by Israeli forces.

Reports indicate that Israeli support may have also included data sharing for potential strikes to keep Iranian forces at bay during the final extraction phase, according to reports.

KEY FAQs

How did Israeli intelligence help in the rescue?

Israel provided critical intelligence support, helping the US locate the stranded airman inside Iran. This likely included surveillance data, tracking, and situational awareness of Iranian troop movements.

Did Israel take any direct action during the mission?

Yes. Israel paused its own military operations in the area to avoid interference and allow the US rescue mission to proceed safely.

Why was this cooperation important?

The mission took place deep inside hostile Iranian territory, where Iranian forces were actively searching for the pilot. Israeli intelligence and coordination helped improve timing, reduce risks, and contributed to the successful recovery of the airman.
