Five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who has rewritten what it means to be at the top of the sport time and again throughout his illustrious career, has revealed that most top chess players do not think too many moves ahead.
Carlsen stated that at most times he thinks only a couple of moves ahead before reevaluating per the tide and situation of the game.
“One common misconception is that chess players think very, very far ahead, which we don’t. You can sometimes think very far ahead if there are very few options, but I mean, I’ve gotten that question so many times, like, how many moves do you see ahead?"
“Most of the time I see like two or three moves. But the truth is, you get to a certain point and then you have to reevaluate because conditions might have changed in some way," he added.
Carlsen, who clinched his 21st World Title with his win over American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana in the final that was held in Weissenhaus in Germany last month, has redefined what it means to be at the top echelons of the sport.
Carlsen, who won the World Championships five times before voluntarily stepping down from competing for the crown, will next be seen in action at the Norway Chess 2026 where he will look to defend his title against the likes of quality opposition including the likes of Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Vincent Keymar, Alireza Firouzja, and Wesley So.
