Amid the goals, drama and endless controversies that have dominated FIFA World Cup 2026, an unexpected star has emerged: pickle juice.

The unusual remedy grabbed headlines during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Australia when referee Felix Zwayer suddenly collapsed with cramp late in the match.

With just minutes remaining in Seattle, the experienced German official had just shown US defender Chris Richards a yellow card when he went down and called for assistance.

Players from both sides immediately rushed over, with Australia midfielder Aiden O’Neill, USA forward Folarin Balogun and one of Zwayer’s assistant referees helping stretch out his leg.

Then came the moment that left fans puzzled.

Mexican fourth official Katie Garcia sprinted onto the pitch carrying a carton of pickle juice, which she handed to Zwayer. After drinking it, the 45-year-old referee was back on his feet within moments and able to officiate the remainder of the game.

Why Did Zwayer Need Pickle Juice?

Referees cramping during matches is relatively rare, but the conditions provided a clear explanation.

Temperatures in Seattle climbed to around 28°C (82°F), and Zwayer had spent more than 90 minutes constantly moving during a high-intensity match that carried significant stakes for the host nation.

The physical demands eventually caught up with him.

What Exactly Is Pickle Juice?

Despite its unusual reputation, pickle juice has become increasingly popular in professional sport.

The drink is made from the leftover brine used to pickle vegetables and is often enriched with vitamins and minerals. Athletes use it as a rapid-response treatment for muscle cramps rather than as a preventative measure.

When the body becomes fatigued, the brain can send overactive signals to tired muscles, triggering painful cramps. Pickle juice helps interrupt that process.

Its combination of sodium, potassium and other electrolytes activates receptors in the mouth and throat, sending signals that can calm muscle contractions in less than a minute. That rapid effect is why it is often kept on hand by elite sports teams and medical staff.

More Than Just Cramp Relief

Beyond stopping cramps, pickle juice is also used to combat dehydration, fatigue and poor circulation.

It has become a common sight in American football locker rooms, endurance sports and elite training facilities, though it rarely receives the spotlight it enjoyed at the World Cup.

For one brief moment in Seattle, however, pickle juice stole the show.
