Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday reacted sharply to the assassination attempt on his father, Farooq Abdullah, and questioned how the attacker managed to get so close to the former Chief Minister despite tight security.

Farooq Abdullah has been provided Z+ security cover by the National Security Guard (NSG).

Raising concerns over the attack, Omar said that his father had a very close shave after a man with a loaded pistol attempted to shoot him at a marriage party in Jammu’s Royal Park in the Greater Kailash area, with the close protection team deflecting the shot and foiling the assassination attempt.

“Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point blank range & discharge a shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt failed," he said in a post on X.

He added that several questions remain, including how someone managed to approach a former Chief Minister guarded by NSG personnel.

“There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM," he added.

Nasir Aslam Wani, advisor to the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister who was present at the event, confirmed that no one was injured.

“Allah has been very kind," Wani told reporters, adding that Farooq Abdullah was safe and resting after the incident.

Regarding police arrangements, he said it was too early to comment on anything. “They (police) should check. It is too early to comment on anything," Wani said, confirming that the accused had been detained.

“He (accused) has been taken into custody for now. This is just the start. When the investigation is complete, we will know what it was and what he was looking for," he said, adding that Farooq Abdullah was absolutely fine and was currently taking rest.

The National Conference President, along with J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, miraculously escaped a deadly attack after a gunman opened fire at him during a marriage function on Wednesday night in Jammu.

The incident took place when Farooq Abdullah was attending a marriage ceremony at Royal Park, Greater Kailash, Jammu. The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, has been taken into custody.

According to the police, the security personnel of NSG, who were deployed with the protectee, immediately swung into action and thwarted the attempt. The accused, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu, was taken into custody.

CCTV footage from the spot showed the man following him closely and pulling out a gun and firing before being blocked by a commando.

Singh, during police interrogation, claimed that he had been planning to kill Farooq Abdullah for the past two decades, sources informed.

The 63-year-old Jammu resident reportedly attacked the NC chief with his licenced gun. “I wanted to kill Farooq Abdullah for the last 20 years. It was my personal agenda. The weapon is my own, issued to me," he said.

According to sources, the accused owns a few shops in the old part of Jammu and survives on rent from his shops.

The firearm, used in the crime, has also been recovered from the possession of the accused, police said, adding that cognisance has been taken and further investigation is ongoing.
