 Step-by-step guide

There may be a situation where users are added to a WhatsApp group they don’t want to be a part of. But as soon as they exit the group, every participant is notified and some may even personally message, forcing that person to join back.

To tackle such situations, WhatsApp allows users to quit the group, without letting everyone know.

A new feature allows individuals to exit group chats discreetly, ensuring that only group admins are notified of their departure. This change allows users to leave unwanted groups without the widespread notification that previously alerted every member. The company stated that this update is built with user privacy “top of mind,” allowing members to exit “without drawing attention.”

How to exit WhatsApp group without alerting everyone

When a user chooses to exit a group, the chat history can either be retained or deleted entirely from their device. Here is the step-by-step process for exiting or deleting a group:

  • Open the group chat and tap the group name at the top.
  • Tap Exit group.
  • Choose one of the following options:
  1. Exit group: Exits the group but keeps the chat history on the user's phone.
  2. Exit and delete for me: Exits the group and removes the chat from the Chats list, erasing the chat history from the phone. When selecting this option, users can also choose to delete all media received in that chat from their device gallery.

While members other than the admins will not receive a notification of the exit, a user's information is not completely erased from the group data:

  • The user's profile name and phone number will still be shown in the "Past members" list found within the Group Info section.
  • Group members can see this information in the Past members list for up to 60 days after the user leaves.
  • Group deletion: Only group admins have the ability to delete a group for all members.
  • Rejoining: If a group is deleted, it cannot be restored. To rejoin a group chat a user has left, they must ask a group admin to re-invite them.
  • Community groups: If the group is part of a larger community, leaving the specific group will also result in exiting the entire community.

WhatsApp is also reminding users that they can adjust their group privacy settings to control who is allowed to add them to a group in the first place, offering another layer of defense against unwanted additions.
