The United States and Iran could be on course for a politically charged FIFA World Cup showdown in 2026. After months of war, which can be argued is still ongoing, a match between the two countries at the biggest tournament in the world would make for some viewing.

The United States, one of the three hosts alongside Canada and Mexico of the increasingly controversial edition, has been drawn in Group D, while Iran will compete in Group G at the expanded 48-team stage. The tournament draw has allowed two straightforward scenarios in which they could meet before the quarter-finals.

The first possibility comes in the Round of 32 on July 3. If both nations finish as runners-up in their respective groups, they would face each other directly in Match 88.

A second and potentially more dramatic route would see both sides top their groups. In that scenario, the United States would advance to Match 81 and Iran to Match 82 in the Round of 32. Should both teams win those fixtures, they would then meet in the Round of 16 on July 6 or 7 in Match 94.

While there are also several mathematical possibilities involving one or both teams progressing as third-placed finishers, those scenarios are considerably more complicated and would likely delay any potential meeting until the latter stages of the competition, including the semi-finals or even the final.

Why a USA-Iran Football match will break the internet?

Any clash between the United States and Iran would inevitably attract global attention, given the long-standing political tensions between the two countries. Formal diplomatic relations have been absent since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the subsequent US Embassy hostage crisis.

In the decades since, relations have been marked by disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, economic sanctions, and broader geopolitical rivalry.

Those tensions have frequently provided the backdrop to football encounters between the two nations. Their meeting at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, won 2-1 by Iran, was widely described as one of the most politically significant matches in the tournament’s history.

More recently, the United States defeated Iran 1-0 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in a game overshadowed by controversy, including a dispute over social media posts involving Iran’s national flag.

The political spotlight has followed Iran into the build-up for 2026 as well, with the visiting Asian side hit by controversial visa delays and political opposition from some US lawmakers before the team was eventually cleared to enter the country.
