An unusual scene unfolded during the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the holy city of Mashhad on Thursday as mourners set ablaze a giant LEGO figure resembling US President Donald Trump. The act was widely viewed as a startling display of public agitation against Washington as tensions flared up in the region.

A video of the episode has gone viral on social media. Shared by Clash Report ––  a prominent global news platform –– the video featured the effigy hanging from a crane as mourners, carrying flaming sticks, surrounded the vehicle. Soon, they torched the model and within moments, it was engulfed in flames.

Moreover, echoes of anti-American and anti-Israel chants filled the streets.

Khamenei’s Funeral

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, was laid to rest next to the shrine of Imam Reza in his hometown, Mashhad. The burial ceremony followed a five-day funeral procession for the late leader that travelled through Tehran, Qom, and the neighbouring Iraq, drawing millions of mourners from around the globe.

Earlier, chants of ‘Death to America’ and ‘Death to Israel’ were raised by mourners as the funeral procession travelled through the streets of Tehran. Pro-regime demonstrators also called for the end of the US as they vowed to “kill Trump". 

Khamenei –– one of the longest-serving heads of state in the region –– was killed on the opening day of the US-Israeli strikes on February 28 that also claimed many of his family members, including his 14-month-old granddaughter.

The ceremony also coincided with fresh escalation in West Asia as Iran and the US exchange in a spate of strikes on Wednesday night, threatening an already-fragile ceasefire and dimming hopes for a peace deal.
