A stray dog was seen with an amputated leg at a Shimla hospital, exposing lapses in biomedical waste handling. Notices issued after a viral video

The incident has raised serious concerns over safety protocols and the handling of biomedical waste within the hospital premises.
A disturbing incident occurred on Tuesday at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties (AIMSS) in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. At the super speciality hospital campus in Chamyana, a stray dog was seen roaming with a human leg in its mouth, triggering shock and outrage.
A video of the incident later went viral on social media.
Amputation And Storage Of The Limb
According to reports, a 61-year-old man underwent surgery at the hospital on February 19, during which his leg was amputated. The severed limb was placed in a sealed envelope and stored in a designated room.
The hospital administration had granted permission to an authorised organisation to collect and transfer the amputated limb. However, no representative from the organisation arrived to take custody of it. As a result, the limb remained stored in the hospital premises.
How The Security Lapse Occurred
On February 22, hospital staff were removing trolleys from the storage room. During the process, the door was reportedly left open and was not locked afterwards. Later that night, strong winds caused the door to swing open, allowing a stray dog to enter the room and carry away the sealed envelope containing the limb.
The following day, February 23, staff discovered an empty envelope near the store and realised the amputated leg was missing. Shortly afterwards, the limb was seen in the mouth of a stray dog within the hospital campus, and the footage quickly circulated online.
Lapses In Biomedical Waste Management
A fact-finding committee was constituted to investigate the incident. The committee has identified negligence in biomedical waste management procedures. For the time being, show-cause notices have been issued to the cleaning staff and the supervisor who were on duty on the night of February 21.
Further action will be taken after their responses are reviewed.
Hospital’s Response
Dr Sudhir Sharma from Chamyana confirmed that disciplinary notices had been served to the concerned staff members. He stated that security personnel attempted to retrieve the limb from the stray dog, but the animal reportedly became aggressive, preventing them from doing so immediately.
The incident has raised serious concerns over safety protocols and the handling of biomedical waste within the hospital premises.
