Hundreds of Israeli right-wing and ultranationalist activists marched near the Gaza border, calling for the re-establishment of Jewish settlements in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory.

The march took place on Wednesday near the southern Israeli city of Sderot, just a short distance from Gaza.

Protesters were seen marching towards the Asaf Siboni observation point, which overlooks the ruins of Beit Hanun in northern Gaza.

Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza two decades ago marked the end of a 38-year military presence in the territory. Around 8,000 settlers were removed and 21 communities dismantled. However, some on the Israeli far right have never given up hope of returning.

Now, amid the ongoing war with Hamas and political hardliners in the Israeli government, some activists believe the time is right to push for resettlement.

“As a movement, 1,000 families — you see them today marching — we are ready to move now, as things stand, and to live in tents," said Daniella Weiss, 79, a former West Bank mayor and vocal advocate for settlement expansion, told AFP.

“We are ready with our children to move into the Gaza area right away, because we believe this is the way to bring quiet, peace, to put an end to Hamas," she added.

Marchers chanted slogans like “Gaza, ours forever!" while loudspeakers played messages calling for the “return of the land" and the defeat of Hamas.

Since October 7, 2023, more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to local health authorities. Israel launched its military operation in response to Hamas-led attacks that killed around 1,200 Israelis and saw more than 250 taken hostage. Of the hostages taken, 49 are still held in Gaza, 27 of whom are confirmed dead.
