Newcastle United dealt Manchester United caretaker Michael Carrick his first defeat as manager, with Eddie Howe’s team narrowly winning their Premier League clash on Thursday.
Goals from Anthony Gordon and William Osula secured the victory for the Toon army, overcoming Casemiro’s strike for the Red Devils in an exciting match.
Newcastle’s achievement was even more impressive considering they played with 10 men for over half the game, as Jacob Ramsey was sent off by referee Peter Bankes during first-half stoppage time.
Carrick, expressed that his first defeat at the helm of the club does in fact feel heavy but vowed to be ready for the upcoming challenges.
“We are not happy the way we played tonight," Carrick said following the defeat.
“The way the game panned out we had it in our hands largely but credit to Newcastle and the way they approached it.
“We knew it would be tough but we navigated the game to a position where we could kick on but we didn’t. Bitterly disappointed really.
“I don’t think it was the 10 men, we just didn’t play good enough. We can’t make excuses for that. We all take responsibility for that."
“We’ve lost one game, we haven’t played well enough but in the grand scheme of things we are in a decent position," he said.
“Tonight hurts but we will be better for the next one," the former midfield maestro said.
“You have to get back at it, work hard and do the things we did to win the games we’ve won. We can do that, we are a good team. Tonight wasn’t for us."
United stand third in the table, behind only title aspirants and leaders Arsenal and former champions and chasing Man City, with 51 points to their name from 29 outings this season, and are up against fourth-placed Aston Villa in ten days.
