Hwh locals move HC over waterlogging woes

Kolkata: Residents of Howrah Panchanantala in ward 19 of Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) have moved the Calcutta High Court over severe waterlogging that has affected thousands of families for years.People living in Satkari Chatterjee Lane, Nilmani Mallick Lane and Madhusudan Biswas Lane said rainwater remains stagnant for days even after short spells of rain. They alleged that repeated petitions to the HMC since 2022 have brought no action.“We have been submitting petitions to HMC since 2022, but nothing has been done. The dirty and foul-smelling water remains stagnated for several days,” said Partha Ghosh, a resident of Satkari Chatterjee Street.Residents said some families have left the area because of the problem. They also claimed that skin diseases and other health risks are rising.“Many have been suffering from skin diseases. Other health risks are also increasing,” said a local resident.Ghosh and six others have filed a petition in court seeking intervention. The next hearing is scheduled for July 10.
