A nine-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide after being repeatedly harassed by classmates over not wearing his school uniform properly. The incident took place in Hyderabad’s Chandanagar locality, where the Class 4 student was found hanging in the washroom of his home on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, the child, identified as Prashanth, returned home from school and was alone at the time. He allegedly went into the bathroom and used the lanyard of his school ID card to hang himself. Family members rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Following information about the incident, local police reached the spot and shifted the body to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem examination. After the completion of legal formalities, the body was sent to the family’s native village for the last rites.

Police have recorded statements from Prashanth’s parents and are investigating the circumstances leading to the incident. His father, Shankar, who works as a watchman in the apartment complex where the family resides, told investigators that his son was active and had no known conflicts. Shankar had earlier worked as a driver at the same school where Prashanth was studying, according to news agency IANS.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over bullying in schools and its impact on children’s mental health. Officials said strict anti-bullying norms govern educational institutions, and depending on the severity of the offence, students found guilty of harassment can face suspension, transfer to another school, mandatory counselling, and legal action, based on their age and the nature of the offence.

Child rights activists and residents have called for stronger mental health support systems and greater sensitisation within schools to prevent such tragedies.
