An Indian-origin man briefly took the microphone at an anti-immigration rally in Australia, only to be shoved aside moments later as his speech drew both cheers and jeers from the crowd. The man, dressed in a yellow T-shirt with “Australia" emblazoned across it, was introduced to the audience with the words, “He looks like a foreigner. He said he would like to speak."

What followed has since circulated widely in an unverified video online. Taking the stage, the man said, “Yes, I am a brown man. Yes, I’m an immigrant from India but I came here for the right reason. What I see happening today- this is not immigration. This is an open-door policy. They are not blending in our culture, they are twisting it."

Before he could continue, he was shoved and the microphone was pulled away. Struggling to finish, the man managed to add, “Immigration is about not taking but giving. Not demanding but respecting."

The rally was part of the “March for Australia" protests held on September 1 across the country, where demonstrators railed against what they called unsustainable levels of migration. Organisers claimed that more Indians had migrated to Australia since 2020 than Greeks or Italians had in their major post-war influx.

On its website, March for Australia said that “Australia’s unity and shared values have been eroded by policies and movements that divide us" and that “mass migration has torn at the bonds that held our communities together."

The Australian government distanced itself from the rallies as Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke condemned the demonstrations, saying, “There is no place in our country for people who seek to divide and undermine our social cohesion. We stand with modern Australia against these rallies – nothing could be less Australian."

The protests also followed a political row triggered by Liberal senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who suggested the government was focused on bringing in more “Labor-leaning" migrant communities such as Indians. Facing a backlash, she later walked back her comments, saying, “Indian migrants, who have come to Australia, have a strong record of integration, embracing our values, working hard in many fields of endeavour and joining the league of cherished and loyal Australian citizens. My own children share Indian ancestry, and I have strong friendships within the Indian and Sikh communities in the Northern Territory. I deeply value these connections."
