C Joseph Vijay has always gone by the mononym Vijay. And so far, that has been enough. But as the new CM took oath, his religion attracted renewed attention outside Tamil Nadu

Actor Vijay’s religion has always been a subject of disinterest among his legion of fans, who have worshipped him rather for his god-like righteousness and near-invincibility on-screen, but as the first Christian Chief Minister Of Tamil Nadu, the TVK chief’s faith is a subject of much curiosity among political observers, especially outside the state.

Known as ‘Thalapathy’ or ‘Commander’ among the masses, Vijay has never hidden his religion, but has never overtly flaunted it either.

Born C Joseph Vijay, he has always gone by the mononym ‘Vijay’. And that has been enough, so far. But on Sunday, as he took the oath of office after a week-long can-he-can’t-he suspense, his full legal name and religion became the subject of much speculation.

When Vijay declared the momentously “I, C Joseph Vijay…", Google searches for his religion spiked to the highest they have been since May 4 when the Tamil superstar defied pollsters and rivals to become the king of Tamil Nadu instead of the kingmaker.

A closer look at the search patterns from Sunday showed most Google queries about Vijay’s religion coming from Kerala, followed by Nagaland, Goa, Meghalaya and Mizoram – all states with sizeable Christian populations.

Netizens also made Google searches for related topics like ‘thalapathy vijay religion’, ‘joseph vijay religion’, ‘joseph vijay’, ‘c joseph vijay full name’, as well as ‘tamilnadu population by religion’.

‘Aandavan Meethu’

Vijay’s decision to swear in “aandavan meethu" (in the name of god) during Sunday’s oath-taking ceremony has also sparked a debate in Tamil Nadu, particularly because many Dravidian leaders previously have traditionally chosen the “ulamaraa" (by conscience) affirmation rooted in the movement’s rationalist ideology.

Most ministers in Vijay’s newly formed TVK cabinet also invoked god while taking oath. However, minister Aadhav Arjuna opted for the conscience-based affirmation, while minister Rajmohan Arumugam invoked god and gestured toward Vijay during the ceremony.

Political commentators point out that former chief minister MG Ramachandran (MGR), though personally considered religious, had still chosen to swear by conscience.

The practice of invoking god at swearing-in ceremonies became more visible during the tenure of J Jayalalithaa and continued under AIADMK administrations led by O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palaniswami. On the other hand, DMK stalwarts ranging from CN Annadurai to M Karunanidhi consistently preferred the conscience-based oath, in line with the rationalist and atheist traditions of the Dravidian movement.

A Blended Family Background

Part of the reason Vijay’s religious identity has rarely been viewed as controversial within Tamil Nadu lies in his own family background, which reflects the state’s long history of cultural and religious intermingling.

Vijay was born to filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar. While Chandrasekhar was born into a Christian family and has often publicly identified with rationalist and Dravidian ideals, Shoba comes from a Hindu background. Vijay himself grew up in an environment where religion was neither aggressively foregrounded nor treated as a political statement.

That upbringing perhaps explains why the actor-politician has, over the years, appeared comfortable participating in customs and traditions across faiths without projecting a sharply defined religious identity. In Tamil cinema too, Vijay was largely seen first as a mass hero rather than as a representative of any particular community or ideology.

Unlike several public figures whose religious affiliations became central to their political image-making, Vijay’s identity remained relatively fluid for decades — shaped more by fan culture, cinema and populist appeal than overt religiosity.

When Vijay Became ‘Joseph Vijay’

Vijay began prominently using his full name after BJP leader H Raja referenced his religion during a controversy linked to the 2017 film Mersal.

At the time, Raja had shared a copy of Vijay’s voter ID card on social media along with the remark, “Truth is bitter," suggesting that the film’s criticism of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was influenced by the actor’s religious identity. The comments drew backlash from political parties as well as members of the film industry.

Following the controversy, Vijay increasingly adopted the name C Joseph Vijay at public events and official appearances. Many fans also expressed solidarity online, with several adding ‘Joseph’ to their own social media profiles.

Faith In Symbolism, Not Branding

Even in his films, Vijay has generally avoided overt religious positioning, preferring broad moral and spiritual themes that appeal across communities. His movies have frequently featured references to concepts like justice, compassion, destiny and righteousness, but rarely in ways tied exclusively to one religion.

Songs, dialogues and visual motifs in Vijay’s films have occasionally incorporated temple imagery, church symbolism or philosophical references, but usually as part of larger emotional or cultural storytelling rather than explicit faith-based messaging.

Industry observers have often noted that Vijay’s screen image was built less around religion and more around the archetype of the relatable protector — a figure positioned as defender of the poor, challenger of corruption and voice of the common man.

That carefully broad appeal helped him build one of Tamil cinema’s most diverse fan bases, cutting across caste, class and religious lines.

It is perhaps for this reason that the renewed focus on Vijay’s religion after his swearing-in ceremony surprised many within Tamil Nadu, where audiences have long viewed him through the lens of stardom and politics rather than religious identity.
