There’s no denying that the talk of the basketball world right now is Bam Adebayo’s jaw-dropping 83-point explosion earlier this week.

The Miami Heat showstopper torched the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night, finishing with the second-highest scoring game in NBA history, surpassing Kobe Bryant’s iconic 81-point performance and sitting just behind Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary 100.

But while the historic night sent fans into a frenzy, it also triggered a fierce debate across the league.

A Historic Night, Followed By Backlash

Adebayo’s 83-point masterpiece drew wildly different reactions. Some celebrated the Heat star for producing one of the greatest individual scoring performances the league has ever seen. Others, however, questioned the circumstances behind the performance.

Much of the criticism centered around the fourth quarter, where Miami continued feeding Adebayo the ball as he chased history.

Critics also pointed to his 43 free-throw attempts — an NBA record in itself — as well as Miami’s late-game tactics that extended possessions and helped inflate the scoring opportunity.

Some even argued that once the game was effectively in hand, Adebayo should have stepped aside rather than push past Bryant’s historic mark.

Bam Claps Back

Speaking after Miami’s 112–105 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, Adebayo didn’t hold back when addressing the backlash.

“First of all, y’all are blaming me; you should be blaming their head coach," Adebayo told reporters.

“Get that first. I was not the one letting me go one-on-one the whole game until I had 70. Then you started to send a double. At that point, I got 70 with, like, what, nine minutes left to go in the game. You think I’m not going for it?"

The Heat star also dismissed the idea that chasing the milestone was somehow unethical.

“And that’s the thing that’s crazy when they talk about the unethical part of basketball," Adebayo said. “I have 70 with nine minutes to go. Who would just be like, ‘Coach, just take me out?’ Yeah, right!"

Adebayo also pushed back on criticism surrounding his record-breaking free-throw tally.

“They’re gonna talk about the free throws," he said. “But you can watch the film. I was legitimately getting fouled every time, so I went to the free-throw line."
