'I Just Had...': Lewis Hamilton Explains Why He Couldn't Seal Front Row Spot

Lewis Hamilton was frustrated that his and Ferrari's excellent progress had not been rewarded.

Lewis Hamilton, the home hero, revealed that a mistake on his final flying lap during Saturday’s qualifying session cost him a likely front-row starting position for the British Grand Prix. The 40-year-old seven-time world champion, who holds the record for nine wins at his home race and seven pole positions, acknowledged that a small error had significant consequences.

“I just had understeer on turn 16 and I lost the time that I had –- it probably cost me a place on the front row," he explained.

Hamilton, aiming for his first podium finish with Ferrari, ended up two-tenths behind pole-sitter Max Verstappen of Red Bull, the four-time world champion. Despite the frustration over the lack of reward for his and Ferrari’s impressive progress, he remained optimistic.

“I’m pleased overall," he commented. “I’m pleased with our progress and our direction. I feel my engineer and I have been gelling better in terms of how we set the car up, and I am happier in the car.

“The lap was really nice until that last corner. It was just a bit of understeer. I don’t know if it was the kerb that put me a little wide, but then I just lost it."

His teammate Charles Leclerc also expressed disappointment, admitting he was to blame for not delivering his best lap.

“I made too many mistakes and it is a pity," he said after qualifying sixth, just behind Hamilton.
