Motherhood has prompted actor Mandira to reflect on her upbringing and parenting style. While acknowledging her parents' strictness and her tendency to follow suit, she consciously strives to break that pattern.

Actor and fitness enthusiast says motherhood has made her reflect deeply on how she was raised and how she wants to raise her own children. “I find myself going into ways that I’ve been parented,” she says.

“Because generally you become the parent that your parents have been to you.”However, she consciously tries to change that pattern. “My parents were quite strict when I was growing up. Sometimes I find myself going down that path, but I try to break that pattern,” she explains.Mandira adds that while she wants to be understanding, certain values remain non-negotiable. “Of course, I want to be firm about certain things which are not right — like lying or being dishonest.

Those are no-brainers for me. I’m very clear about those.”At the same time, she admits she has had to rethink some beliefs she grew up with. “I’ve had to unlearn a lot, especially when it comes to academic pressure. We grew up with so much emphasis on grades, and it was very hard on me. When I look at my children, I see the bigger picture — their mental health matters.”Instead of pushing them only toward achievements, Mandira says she focuses on their happiness. “I tell them to enjoy school, have a good time, and focus on the things that make you happy.”
