Iran on Sunday issued a stark warning to the United States with the unveiling of a new mural in Enghelab Square in Tehran, depicting damaged aircraft on the deck of a US aircraft carrier alongside the message: “If you sow the wind, you will reap the whirlwind."
The mural’s appearance comes amid rising tensions as the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and accompanying warships move closer to the region. Donald Trump has said the deployment is precautionary, noting that the ships are being positioned “just in case" he decides to take military action.
“We have a massive fleet heading in that direction, and maybe we won’t have to use it," Trump said on Thursday.
Enghelab Square is frequently used by Iranian authorities for state-organised gatherings, with its murals often changed to reflect political messages or national events. On Saturday, the commander of Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the force was “more ready than ever, finger on the trigger."
US-Iran tensions have escalated following a severe crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran, which erupted late last year over economic hardship and the collapse of the rial. The demonstrations were met with a violent response by Iran’s authorities, drawing international condemnation. Trump has warned of military action if Iran continues killing protesters or carries out mass executions of detainees.
While protests have subsided in recent days, Trump claimed that Tehran had halted executions of about 800 arrested demonstrators—a claim Iran’s top prosecutor has dismissed as “completely false." Trump has nonetheless said he is keeping military options open, warning that any new action would make last June’s U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites “look like peanuts."
Amid the heightened alert, United States Central Command said its Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle jets are now operating in the Middle East to bolster combat readiness. The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence also announced the deployment of Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar in what it described as a defensive move.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 5,459 people have been killed in the unrest, with more than 40,800 arrests recorded. The group says its figures are based on a network of activists inside Iran, though they could not be independently verified. Iran’s government has put the death toll much lower, at 3,117, and has disputed the higher estimates, an approach critics say mirrors past undercounting of fatalities during periods of unrest.
The scale of the violence is the deadliest Iran has seen in decades, evoking memories of the turmoil surrounding the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
