Iga Swiatek has set a new benchmark in tennis history, surpassing Monica Seles’ long-standing record for the most consecutive opening-round victories in the Open Era. It was her 65th straight win in WTA Singles opening matches.
Former champion Swiatek began her U.S. Open campaign with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango on Tuesday, as the Pole aims to maintain her impressive streak in New York.
The blindingly bright sun seemed to be the biggest challenge for the Wimbledon winner at Arthur Ashe Stadium, as she never faced a break point and delivered 26 winners compared to five from her opponent.
She will next face Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands.
What Did Iga Swiatek Say After Her Win At US Open?
“First matches aren’t easy to get used to the rhythm," said Swiatek, who reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year. “For sure was a solid match."
The 2022 champion displayed her usual precision play to break the unseeded Arango from the baseline in the fourth game and dominated the rest of the set, losing only one of her first-serve points.
Swiatek broke her opponent in the opening game of the second set, committing only five unforced errors. Arango expressed her frustration with a clumsy shot into the net in the seventh game, aiding the six-time major winner to another break.
The 24-year-old had her devoted Polish fans on their feet as she closed the match with a forehand winner, celebrating quietly.
“Polish fans are kind of everywhere, it’s super nice to feel the support always," said the world number two.
Swiatek arrived in New York in excellent form, showing no signs of fatigue. She entered the U.S. Open mixed doubles a day after winning the Cincinnati tune-up tournament and reached the final with Norwegian Casper Ruud.
A second title for the 2022 champion at Flushing Meadows would make her the first woman to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same year since Serena Williams in 2012.
Swiatek also has the opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 ranking if she wins the title and Aryna Sabalenka loses before the quarterfinals.
