A series of double faults set the early pace before Iga Swiatek found her stride on the grass courts, propelling her into the Wimbledon quarterfinals with a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory over Danish 23rd seed Clara Tauson on Monday.

Swiatek struggled with the cold and blustery winds swirling around Court One, starting her match with two double faults and losing her serve to love. Although she quickly regained the break, her serve continued to falter, resulting in two more double faults and another dropped serve in the third game.

From 3-1 down in the first set, the Polish eighth seed barely made a mistake, wrapping up the match in just 65 minutes. Swiatek addressed the crowd, acknowledging the shaky start but expressing hope for Tauson, who had been feeling ill.

Swiatek had anticipated a barrage of one-shot winners from Tauson, who entered the match with the most aces in this year’s women’s tournament. Tauson’s impressive tally of 27 aces, averaging nine per match, included a victory over 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina two days prior.

With high expectations that she could become the first Danish woman to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in the professional era, Denmark’s King Frederik moved from his Royal Box seat on Centre Court to watch Tauson on Court One.

However, instead of increasing her ace count, Tauson conceded the first set with a double fault, and her game unraveled as Swiatek claimed eight of the last nine games to reach the quarterfinals for the second time in three years.

Tauson explained that to defeat Swiatek, one must be at 110%, but on that day she felt only at 30%, struggling with her health. She admitted that Swiatek’s initial nerves dissipated, leaving her unable to keep up physically and mentally.

Tauson expressed her frustration, citing difficulty in breathing, a lack of power in her legs and arm, and the challenge of serving, resulting in a tough end to the match.

Swiatek will now face Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova for a place in the semi-finals.
