A 31-year-old first-year M Tech student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU), was found dead, with initial reports suggesting cardiac arrest.
The victim, Anoop Singh Chauhan, a mechanical engineering student, was discovered unconscious by his friends just before an exam. He was taken to the campus hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A detailed post-mortem report is still pending.
Anoop, a native of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, had joined IIT-BHU two months ago. He was scheduled to take an exam at 8 am on Wednesday. According to police, he and two friends had studied in his room until around 3 am the previous night before going to sleep.
When his friends tried to wake him at 6 am for the exam, they found him unresponsive. His body was not cold and was noted to be slightly warm. Despite attempting CPR, they were unable to revive him. The IIT administration was alerted, and Anoop was rushed to the hospital.
Anoop’s father, Vinod Singh, an advocate in Azamgarh, said that Anoop had spoken to his younger brother on the phone around 11.30 pm the night before and had not mentioned any health concerns.
The father was informed of his son’s death by IIT-BHU shortly before the scheduled exam. He has not alleged any wrongdoing.
Following the post-mortem, the police handed over the body to the family.
The incident marks the latest episode in a series of heart attacks among young people, as the country has witnessed multiple such cases in recent times, prompting health experts and authorities to closely examine the matter and conduct a thorough study.
