Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan could be moved to the Islamabad Model Jail, according to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, CNN News18 has learned exclusively. The decision comes amid growing concerns over Imran Khan’s deteriorating health and ongoing political scrutiny of his detention.
The Islamabad Model Jail is designed to provide specialist medical care, emergency response units and upgraded diagnostic facilities, aimed at addressing the health concerns highlighted in a recent court-appointed report on Imran Khan.
“The jail is being prepared to meet the requirements of high-profile inmates, with full medical support and security measures," Naqvi said. The facility is expected to be operational within the next two months, with construction and security audits in the final stages.
Reducing Reliance On Adiala Jail
The move would lessen dependence on Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, which has faced criticism over overcrowding, security management and treatment of high-profile detainees. Security arrangements at the Model Jail will include layered surveillance, restricted access zones and enhanced perimeter control to manage high-risk inmates. Officials also noted that the shift would streamline court logistics, as Islamabad-based hearings would reduce repeated transfers between Rawalpindi and federal courts, easing administrative and security burdens.
Medical Report Details Imran Khan’s Health Deterioration
The move comes as a Pakistan Supreme Court-appointed amicus curiae Salman Safdar reported that Imran Khan has lost nearly 85% of vision in his right eye, attributed to delayed medical treatment during nearly three years in Adiala Jail.
According to the report, Imran Khan experienced persistent blurred vision beginning in October 2025, which was repeatedly reported to jail authorities but went untreated. He was eventually diagnosed with a blood clot at PIMS Hospital, leaving him with only 15% vision in the affected eye.
The report also confirmed that Imran Khan has been in solitary confinement for over two years, denied regular medical tests and restricted from dental care and routine health monitoring. The report highlighted that Imran Khan’s family and legal counsel access has been severely limited: Weekly 30-minute meetings with his wife were only recently allowed, contact with his sons occurred twice in 2025 and access to lead counsel was denied for five months, impeding his ability to prepare a legal defence.
