Erika Kirk, the widow of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, came face-to-face with the alleged assassin of her husband, Tyler Robinson, in court for the first time on Monday. A five-day preliminary hearing began in a Utah court, where prosecutors would lay out evidence and push for a murder trial.

This was the first time members of Kirk’s family, including his parents Robert and Kathryn Kirk, had faced the defendant, Robinson, in a Utah courtroom. Erika Kirk, who sat beside her in-laws, appeared emotional as witnesses shared accounts of how her husband was shot and killed while addressing a rally at a Utah university last year, according to CNN. 

Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist and and the co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead while he was addressing a rally of thousands at Utah Valley University in September 2025. Tyler Robinson –– who surrendered before investigators last year –– is charged with aggravated murder.

‘People Were Screaming, Running’

Visibly overwhelmed by emotions, Charlie Kirk’s family was seen leaving the courtroom when onlookers described what happened on September 10, 2025 –– the day he was fatally shot in the neck. Graphic footage of the shooting were also played during the proceedings.

Donald Trump Jr., the son of President Donald Trump and a close friend of Kirk’s, was also present in the court with his wife, Bettina Trump.

“A lot of people were screaming, standing up and starting to run in all different directions," Officer Christopher Bagley, one of two witnesses recalled, as quoted by CNN. 

Prosecutors have expressed their intent to seek death penalty for Robinson, 23.  He is charged with aggravated murder, felony use of a firearm, committing a violent offense in the presence of a child and witness tampering.

Charlie Kirk’s Killing

Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University while he was addressing a crowd that gathered to start an event kicking off his national “The American Comeback" tour.

According to prosecutors, Robinson –– who turned himself in a day after the shooting –– had sent a text message to his partner, saying he had an opportunity to kill one of the nation’s leading conservative voices.

“And I’m going to take it", he had reportedly said, according to the Associated Press.

This week, prosecutors will attempt to establish there’s sufficient ground to believe Robinson was the one who killed Kirk. If the judge is satisfied with the evidence, the accused will be made to formally enter pleas.
