Bhubaneswar: Residents of Maitree Vihar and nearby localities will soon have a new recreational hub as the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) moves ahead with plans to develop Hatiasuni Park.
The Rs 1.36-cr project is part of the city’s broader push to create sustainable green spaces amid rapid urbanisation. The proposed park will transform a vacant patch of about 2 acres of land into a lush green space featuring walking tracks, seating areas, and dedicated zones for children and senior citizens. Officials said the design will emphasise eco-friendly elements, native plants, and open lawns to encourage community gatherings and outdoor activities.
Bhubaneswar has witnessed a surge in housing and commercial projects in recent years, often at the cost of open spaces. Different sections of citizens have repeatedly stressed the need for accessible parks to balance development with liveability.“Green spaces are not just aesthetic additions. They are vital for mental well-being and social interaction. We have been developing playgrounds as well as parks in different parts of the city to ensure sustainable urbanisation of Bhubaneswar,” said chief horticulturist, BDA, Sukanta Chandra Swain.
The Maitree Vihar area, home to thousands of families, currently lacks a well-equipped public park. Residents have long demanded a facility where children can play safely and elders can enjoy morning walks without any disturbance. The Hatiasuni Park project aims to fill this gap.Residents welcomed the development, calling it a step toward healthier lifestyles. “We have been waiting for a proper park for years.
It will be a relief for parents and senior citizens who now have to travel far for open spaces,” said Anita Mohapatra, a homemaker from Maitree Vihar.Environmentalists also see the move as timely. “Urban heat islands are becoming a concern in Bhubaneswar. Parks like Hatiasuni can help mitigate temperature rise and improve air quality,” said city-based environmentalist Sailabala Padhi. The development aligns with BDA’s vision to make Bhubaneswar a model smart city with inclusive public spaces. Similar projects have been undertaken in Saheed Nagar, Nayapalli, and Patia, where revamped parks have become popular community hubs.Officials hinted that Hatiasuni Park will feature modern amenities such as LED lighting, benches, and landscaped gardens. Work is expected to begin soon, with completion targeted within four months of commencement, sources said.
