A video showing a Mexican mayor missing the inaugural ride of a new train line after arriving late has gone viral, sparking a wave of reactions online — many drawing comparisons with India.

The incident took place during the launch of Line 4 of the Tren Ligero (light rail) in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco. According to reports, Mayor Gerardo Quirino Velázquez reached the platform moments after the train doors had already closed.

In the now widely shared clip, the train can be seen departing on schedule with other officials, including the state governor, already on board, while the mayor runs alongside the platform trying to catch it. Despite the attempt, he is unable to board as the train pulls away.

The video gained traction after being shared on X, with several users highlighting the fact that the train did not wait, even for a senior official.

The mayor later addressed the incident himself, sharing the moment on social media with a light-hearted caption in Spanish: “Don’t worry, it comes every nine minutes," pointing to the frequency of the service.

The clip has since triggered a wider conversation online. Many users contrasted the situation with what they described as VIP culture in India, where public events and transport schedules are often adjusted to accommodate late-arriving officials.

“In India, the train driver wouldn’t even dare to think about moving an inch before the neta waves the green flag," one user wrote.

Another said, “In India, the signal wouldn’t even turn green… forget the train leaving a station!"

Some users suggested that railway staff could face consequences in a similar situation. “If the train had left even two minutes early without waiting for a minister, the driver would have been suspended, transferred, or even arrested," a comment read.

“In Mexico, trains leave on time even if the mayor is late. In India, drivers get suspended if they don’t wait for ministers," one user wrote.

Another said, “There, systems run on schedule. Here, schedules run on ministers."

The video continues to circulate widely, with the focus shifting from the missed train to broader questions around punctuality, protocol and how public systems operate in different countries.
