Al Nassr’s Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo missed his second consecutive game as the Saudi Pro League team secured another victory over Al Ittihad on Friday. Ronaldo is reportedly dissatisfied with his club’s lack of activity in the transfer market and has been absent from Al Nassr’s matches against Al Riyadh and Al Ittihad.
Fans of Al Nassr demonstrated their support for Ronaldo by holding up cards with the forward’s name and number in the 7th minute of the game.
The 41-year-old’s continued absence fuels speculation about his future at the club, despite having 18 months remaining on his current contract.
Ronaldo’s absence against Al Ittihad follows a stern warning from the League, stating that no player, regardless of their significance, should prioritise personal interests over the club’s.
“The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules," a Saudi Pro League spokesperson said.
““Clubs have their own boards, their own executives and their own football leadership. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. That framework applies equally across the league."
“Cristiano has been fully engaged with Al-Nassr since his arrival and has played an important role in the club’s growth and ambition," he spokesperson added.
“Like any elite competitor, he wants to win. But no individual – however significant – determines decisions beyond their own club."
“Recent transfer activity demonstrates that independence clearly. One club strengthened in a particular way. Another chose a different approach. Those were club decisions, taken within approved financial parameters," he added.
Despite the Portuguese forward’s absence, Al Nassr clinched a 2-0 win over the league leaders, thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Angelo Gabriel, reducing the gap to just one point. Al Nassr currently sits second in the league with 49 points from 20 games, just one point behind Al Ittihad. Al Ahli holds third place with 47 points, followed by Al Qadsiah in fourth with 43 points this season.
