The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a sharp rebuke to Al Jazeera English for describing Jammu and Kashmir as “Indian-administered Kashmir". In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the official MEA Factcheck handle called out the news outlet and reaffirmed India’s position. The post read, “Disinformation alert! Jammu and Kashmir is an inalienable and integral part of India."
New Delhi maintains that the entire Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, including parts under Pakistan’s control, is an integral part of India. It has repeatedly objected to international media referring to the region as “Indian-administered" or “disputed"- arguing that such terminology is factually incorrect and undermines India’s sovereignty.
The government has previously raised objections to global media outlets including BBC, The New York Times and The Washington Post over similar usage.
The post quickly drew widespread attention on social media, with many users expressing outrage and urging the Indian government to take stronger action against the Qatar-based media organisation.
One user wrote, “It is not a matter of just fact check dear @PMOIndia. Kindly ask the concerned agencies to arrest this journalist and ban the media house which he works for."
Another added, “Why this channel is not banned in India? Why no fine imposed on them?" while a third user demanded, “Ban this fraud channel."
