England’s fightback was led by Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184*), who shared a defiant 303-run stand, the highest sixth-wicket partnership for England against India in Tests. But once Akash Deep broke through, cleaning up Brook with the new ball, England collapsed. Akash Deep (4/98) and Mohammed Siraj (6/119) ripped through the tail, restricting England’s reply to 180 runs short of India’s first-innings 587.
