Authorities in Nepal have imposed an indefinite curfew in four key areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City in Parsa district following a clash between two youth groups on Sunday evening. The curfew began on Monday morning and will remain in place until further notice.

The Chief District Officer said the curfew was issued under Section 6(a) of the Local Administration Act, 2028. It prohibits residents from moving around, gathering, holding rallies or demonstrations, meeting, or sieging within the designated areas.

The restricted zones include Bypass Road in the east, Sirsia River in the west, Gandak Chowk in the north, and Shankaracharya Gate in the south.

“In view of the latest security situation, a curfew order has been issued from 9:45 am today, February 23, 2026, until further orders," the official notice read.

Authorities clarified that essential movement will be allowed under exemptions. These include ambulances, fire engines, hearses, vehicles carrying health workers or media personnel, students travelling for pre-scheduled university exams, staff at exam centres, tourist vehicles, vehicles of human rights and diplomatic missions, and air passengers with valid tickets.

Security personnel have been deployed to enforce the curfew and ensure the safe passage of exempted vehicles.

Meanwhile, additional security forces have been dispatched across districts outside the Kathmandu Valley, particularly in the southern plains, to maintain safety at nearly 11,000 polling stations ahead of Nepal’s national elections.

Over 3 lakh security personnel, including police, army, and election police, are tasked with ensuring a peaceful electoral process scheduled for March 5.

At the Nepal Police Academy in Kathmandu, more than 3,000 police personnel boarded buses as they departed for their assigned districts to bolster election security.
