India’s relationship with Bangladesh stands on its own and is not linked to its ties with other countries. India keeps a close watch on developments that affect its national interests and takes all necessary steps to protect them, the government told Parliament on Friday.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, said India supports a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh, and this has been communicated to the interim government in all relevant meetings.
The government also said it constantly monitors events in neighboring countries, especially those that impact India’s security and interests. Singh emphasized that India’s relations with its neighbors are a top priority and are shaped by mutual interests and current circumstances.
The Ministry of External Affairs was questioned about whether India-Bangladesh relations are currently at a sensitive stage and if Pakistan is attempting to exploit the situation.
Singh replied that India and Bangladesh share deep historical, cultural, and social ties, and their relationship focuses on people-centered development, with regular exchanges and meetings.
He emphasised that India’s relationship with Bangladesh is separate from its relations with other nations. The government remains vigilant about developments impacting India’s interests and takes all necessary steps to safeguard them
The MEA was also asked if India has discussed reports of public killings of minority citizens, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. Singh said India has consistently raised concerns about the safety of minorities with Bangladeshi authorities, including at the highest level, and the issue was brought up by the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister during a meeting with Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain on February 16, 2025.
The government continues to keep track of reports concerning the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. Singh emphasized that it is primarily Bangladesh’s responsibility to ensure the protection of all its citizens, including minority communities.
In another query, the MEA was asked about the growing alliance between Pakistan, China, and Bangladesh, given India’s shared borders and possible economic and security threats. Singh said the government constantly monitors all developments affecting India’s security and economy and takes necessary steps to safeguard them, including those in the immediate neighborhood.
India continues to work with regional partners to ensure its security and economic interests are respected and advanced. The government remains committed to protecting India’s national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security.
In a separate written response, the government stated that it maintains continuous vigilance over developments in neighboring countries, particularly those that impact India’s security and national interests.
India continues to engage with its neighbors through diplomatic dialogue, development partnerships, people-to-people exchanges, trade, connectivity initiatives, and regional mechanisms, under the Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.
The government is committed to safeguarding India’s security and interests and promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
