US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday shared a post on X praising American diplomats in India and highlighting Washington’s growing economic partnership with New Delhi, while also posting pictures from his ongoing India visit and meetings with top Indian leaders.
In his X post, Rubio thanked US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and American diplomats for their efforts in strengthening bilateral ties.
“Huge thanks to @USAmbIndia Sergio Gor and our American diplomats for their efforts. Because of their great work, India has committed to purchasing USD 500 billion in U.S. goods over the next five years focusing on energy, technology, and agriculture. They’re doing terrific work on behalf of President Trump and the American people!" Rubio wrote.
The post was accompanied by photographs from his engagements in India, interactions with senior officials, and visuals from diplomatic events attended during the visit.
The images also showed Rubio alongside Ambassador Sergio Gor and other American representatives during official discussions and engagements linked to the India-US partnership.
RUBIO MEETS PM MODI IN NEW DELHI
Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital shortly after arriving in New Delhi as part of his four-day India visit.
The meeting focused on bilateral ties, energy cooperation, regional security and developments in West Asia.
Following the meeting, Rubio posted on X, “In New Delhi, I met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to underscore the importance of the US-India relationship. We discussed the situation in the Middle East and US-India partnership in energy, securing critical supply chains, and collaboration on emerging technologies. I was pleased to invite Prime Minister Modi to the White House on behalf of the President."
The US State Department said Rubio stressed that the United States would not allow Iran to “hold the global energy market hostage" and noted that American energy exports could help diversify India’s energy supply.
Prime Minister Modi also commented on the meeting through a social media post.
“Happy to receive the US Secretary of State, Mr. Marco Rubio. We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security. India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good," PM Modi wrote.
DISCUSSIONS ON TRADE, TECHNOLOGY AND DEFENCE
Both sides reflected on recent bilateral achievements, including investments connected to the “Mission 500" initiative aimed at doubling trade between India and the United States by 2030.
The State Department spokesperson said Rubio and Modi agreed to deepen trade and defence cooperation while accelerating collaboration in critical and emerging technologies.
US Ambassador Sergio Gor, who attended the meeting, described India as a “vital partner" to the United States.
“Great to join Secretary Rubio for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen US-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies – areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is a vital partner to the United States!" Gor posted on X.
In another post, Gor said Rubio had extended an invitation to Modi on behalf of US President Donald Trump to visit the White House in the near future.
RUBIO SPEAKS ON IRAN, STRAIT OF HORMUZ
During interactions with reporters at the US Embassy, Rubio also spoke about ongoing negotiations involving Iran and said progress had been made.
The US Secretary of State indicated that developments could emerge within days.
“There has been some progress made. Even as I speak to you now, some work is being done," Rubio said.
“There’s been some progress done, some progress made, even as I speak to you. There’s some work being done. There is a chance that, whether it’s later today, tomorrow, or in a couple of days, we may have something to say," he added.
Rubio reiterated Washington’s stand that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons and said the Strait of Hormuz must remain open for shipping without tolls.
“Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. The Strait must remain open without tolls, and they need to hand over their enriched and highly enriched uranium. These have consistently been the President’s positions," he said.
VISIT ACROSS INDIA, QUAD TALKS AHEAD
Rubio’s May 23-26 India visit includes stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi.
He began the trip by arriving in Kolkata, where he was received at the airport by Ambassador Sergio Gor.
Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette Rubio, also visited the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity in the city.
The visit comes ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled in New Delhi on May 26.
Foreign ministers from Australia and Japan are also expected to participate in the talks hosted by India.
Rubio also praised the broader India-US relationship during his remarks at the US Embassy.
“The world’s oldest democracy — the United States, and the world’s largest democracy — India, are natural partners now and in the future," he said.
“It is a great relationship already. We do so much together, and there is so much more to do," Rubio added.
