The Ministry of External Affairs issued a strongly worded statement condemning a military attack on a Thai commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the targeting of civilian shipping in the ongoing West Asia conflict is escalating to dangerous new levels.
The vessel, Mayuree Naree, a Thai-flagged ship, was struck while transiting one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints en route to Kandla, a major port on India’s western coast in Gujarat.
“India deplores the fact that commercial shipping is being made a target of military attacks in the ongoing conflict in West Asia," the MEA said in its statement, adding that “the intensity and lethality of the attacks only seems to be increasing."
The ministry noted that Indian citizens have already been among those killed in previous maritime attacks during the conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, is one of the most strategically significant shipping corridors in the world, through which a significant share of global oil and commercial cargo passes daily. Disruptions to navigation there carry major consequences for energy markets and supply chains worldwide.
India called on all parties to refrain from targeting commercial vessels and endangering civilian crew members, reiterating its long-standing position in favor of freedom of navigation and unimpeded maritime commerce.
