The 48-year-old, who is set to part ways with ISL side Jamshedpur FC, will lead his first National camp tentatively on the 15th of the month in Kolkata.

New head coach of the Indian national football team, Khalid Jamil penned a contract to keep him at the helm of the Blue Tigers for a period of two years.

The 48-year-old, who is set to part ways with ISL side Jamshedpur FC as the Men of Steel look to put an interim coach in charge of the side. Jamil will lead his first National camp tentatively on the 15th of the month in Kolkata as he prepares a shortlist of players.

Jamil became  the first Indian to hold the position full-time since Sukhvinder Singh in 2005, after years of foreign stewardship and only brief interim stints by Indians like Armando Colaco and Savio Medeira.

Jamil, who led Aizawl Football Club to the I-League title in 2017, has become the first Indian in 13 years to be appointed as the national team coach. The last Indian to hold this position was Savio Medeira, who served as the head coach from 2011 to 2012.

The AIFF’s Technical Committee, chaired by Indian legend IM Vijayan, shortlisted three coaches for the role: Stephen Constantine, Stefan Tarkovic, and Jamil.

Jamil was selected over Constantine, who had previously managed the Blue Tigers, and former Slovakian coach Tarkovic. The position had been vacant since Marquez’s resignation due to a series of poor results.

Jamil’s first task in his new role will be to lead the Indian team at the Central Asian Football Association Nations Cup, which will take place in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The tournament is scheduled to start on August 29 with India facing Tajikistan in Dushanbe, followed by matches against Iran on September 1 and Afghanistan on September 4.
