India Monsoon Watch: Heavy Rain Batters Mumbai, Delhi Cools Down As IMD Warns Of More Showers

The IMD said a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to keep the monsoon active across central India for the next four to five days.

Heavy monsoon showers continued to affect several parts of India on Saturday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting an active spell over large parts of the country over the next few days.

In Delhi, light to moderate rain lashed several areas, prompting the IMD to issue a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

Heavy Rain Likely In Delhi Till July 9

Cloudy skies prevailed throughout the day, and the weather office said rainfall activity is likely to continue until July 9.

Meanwhile, Mumbai and its neighbouring areas witnessed relentless rain, leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions to local train services. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for schools and colleges after the IMD issued a red alert.

Mumbai Reels Under Heavy Rain

Several incidents of tree falls, house and wall collapses were reported, while floodwaters claimed the life of a six-year-old child in neighbouring Palghar. More than 180 people stranded in waterlogged areas were rescued.

Monsoon To Advance Across Northwestern India

The IMD said a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to keep the monsoon active across central India for the next four to five days. It added that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into the remaining parts of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, as well as parts of Gujarat and the North Arabian Sea over the next four days.

The weather department has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, the Gujarat region, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Odisha and West Madhya Pradesh.

Red Alerts Issued For 4 States

Red alerts have been issued for parts of Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal and Kerala. Heavy rain also affected Punjab, while Gujarat’s Junagadh reported severe waterlogging. In Kerala, rising river and dam levels prompted authorities to issue flood, landslide and sea erosion warnings. Odisha and West Bengal remain on alert as the Bay of Bengal weather system is expected to intensify further, bringing widespread heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions.
