The Indian mixed recurve archery team of Dhiraj Bommadevara and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod stunned South Korea to bag the title at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Antalya, providing a massive boost to the duo ahead of the Asian Games in September.

Dhiraj and Kumkum produced a composed display to beat Kim Je-deok and Oh Ye-jin 5-1 (37-36, 37-36, 39-39) in a high-quality final, overcoming one of world archery’s most decorated pairings with confidence and intent.

Displaying maturity beyond her age, the 17-year-old Kumkum said that she focused on the process rather than the opposition.

“I believed in myself completely. I just focused on the process and did not think about who was standing in front of me. I think I shot better today than I did in Shanghai," Kumkum said.

“But definitely that gold medal there gave me a lot of confidence," the teenager added.

The win against South Korea was India’s second against the archery powerhouse in as many months, highlighting the growing confidence within the recurve setup ahead of the Asian Games, now just three months away.

At the Shanghai World Cup last month, the women’s recurve trio of Deepika Kumari, Kumkum and Ankita Bhakat stunned South Korea, the record 10-time Olympic champions, in the semi-finals before going on to clinch the gold medal.

For 24-year-old Dhiraj and 17-year-old Kumkum, there was little sign of nerves as they took on a formidable South Korean duo featuring Kim Je-deok, the Tokyo Olympics mixed team gold medallist alongside An San and a member of South Korea’s Paris Olympics gold medal-winning men’s team.

Despite the pedigree of their opponents, Dhiraj and Kumkum competed with brilliant composure and confidence.

Dhiraj and Kumkum, who made her World Cup debut only this season, showed brilliant composure throughout the final, matching the Koreans shot for shot before delivering the decisive arrows in the pressure moments.
