The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has confirmed that the Indian men’s football team will take part in the Unity Cup, a four-nation tournament to be held in London from May 26 to 30.

The competition is expected to feature strong international opposition, with the Nigeria national football team and the Jamaica national football team emerging as the highest-ranked sides among the participants.

Despite their pedigree, Nigeria narrowly missed out on qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026 after falling short in the playoff stage. Jamaica also came close to securing a spot but were denied after losing a tense final-round qualifier to DR Congo. Both teams are expected to draw significant attention at the Unity Cup, continuing the tournament’s tradition of featuring nations with strong diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.

What Is The Unity Cup?

“The Unity Cup features nations with large communities in the UK," a senior official was quoted as saying to TOI on Wednesday.

“India have been invited for the first time."

While the fourth participating team has not yet been officially announced, it is likely to be another African nation. The tournament will follow a knockout format, with the semifinal winners progressing to the final, while the losing sides will compete for third place.

History Of India In England

India’s participation also marks a return to English soil after several years. The national team’s first visit to England dates back to the 1948 London Olympics,

In a trip in 2000, India faced clubs like Fulham and West Bromwich Albion before ending the tour with a win over Bangladesh. In fact, India faced Jamaica in 2002, losing 3-0 and drawing 0-0, in the Blue Tigers’ last outing on UK soil.

“India has a large community in the UK so the team is expected to attract a good crowd." said another official.

India head into the tournament on a positive note after defeating the Hong Kong national football team 2-1 in an AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier in Kochi. The victory, secured under head coach Khalid Jamil, marked the team’s first win of the campaign, with debutant Ryan Williams playing a key role.
