India’s title defence in the women’s team event ended in disappointment with a 0-3 loss to a second-string China in the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Team Championships on Friday.

India had secured a historic gold medal in the 2024 edition, but the absence of star player PV Sindhu due to a niggle made defending the title challenging.

World No. 42 Tanvi, who had been pivotal in the first singles with two previous wins in the tournament, failed to provide a strong start, losing 9-21, 9-21 to World No. 10 Gao Fang Jie in a one-sided opener.

The doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly then delivered a spirited performance before falling 22-24, 18-21 to the world No. 4 duo of Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian, giving China a decisive 2-0 lead.

In a must-win situation, Rakshitha Ramraj put up a tough fight against Xu Wen Jing in the second singles but ultimately lost 14-21, 21-15, 17-21 in a 69-minute match.

India had started their campaign with a 5-0 sweep of Myanmar before narrowly losing 2-3 to Thailand in their final group match on Thursday.

The Indian men’s team is set to face South Korea in the quarterfinals later today.
