The Indian Army has been deployed in Telangana’s Medak district to assist civil authorities after incessant rain triggered flooding and paralysed normal life in several parts of the region on August 27.

The Southern Command of the Indian Army confirmed that its troops have been pressed into service to carry out rescue and relief operations. In a post on X, it said that flood relief columns had been launched and were working in close coordination with the Civil Administration, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

“Engineering Task Forces (ETF) are clearing obstacles and restoring connectivity, while Medical Teams are providing urgent care to the affected. With specialised boats, essential equipment and skilled troops, the Army is evacuating stranded citizens, distributing relief material and relocating families to safer areas,” the Command stated.

The downpour has been particularly severe in northern Telangana. According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Argonda in Kamareddy district recorded 44 cm of rainfall between 8 a.m. on August 27 and 7 a.m. on August 28. This was followed by 32.5 cm in Akkapur (Nirmal), 31.6 cm in Sardhana (Medak), 28.9 cm in Tadwai (Kamareddy), 28.1 cm in Waddyal (Nirmal), 27.9 cm in Bhiknoor (Kamareddy), and 27.8 cm in Nagapur (Medak).
