Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Funeral: An official Indian delegation led by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lt Gen (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain paid tributes to Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Friday ahead of the country’s state funeral ceremonies.

The delegation represented the Government of India at the mourning ceremony as Iran began formal funeral rites for Khamenei, who was killed during the recent US-Israel conflict.

The tribute was paid at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, where Khamenei’s mortal remains were placed for public and official condolences before the multi-day state funeral.

Apart from the official delegation, several Indian political leaders also travelled to Tehran to pay their respects. The Embassy of Iran in India shared photographs on social media showing People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, Congress leader Salman Khurshid, who heads the party’s foreign affairs department, and other Indian delegates before their departure.

An honour for me to be here in Tehran to express my deepest condolences & solidarity on the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei- a revered leader who dared to stand against the tide & fought for the oppressed. pic.twitter.com/dyfRbNXhsr— Mehbooba Mufti (@MehboobaMufti) July 3, 2026

Mehbooba Mufti left New Delhi on Thursday evening to attend the funeral ceremonies, becoming the only non-Shia politician from Jammu and Kashmir invited by Iran for the event.

According to Iranian state media, the funeral ceremonies began on Friday with foreign dignitaries, religious scholars and representatives of recognised religious minorities offering tributes at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran.

Press TV reported that delegations from countries including Indonesia and Afghanistan were among the first foreign guests to attend the ceremonies.

Large crowds of mourners also gathered across Tehran ahead of the state funeral, scheduled to continue from July 4 to July 9. Iranian state media showed Khamenei’s casket draped with a red flag from the shrine of Imam Hussein, which Iranian authorities described as a symbol of resistance and sacrifice.
