An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to 34 years in prison in the United Kingdom after being convicted of kidnapping, torturing and raping a 24-year-old woman in a case police described as involving “unimaginable" brutality.
Gagandeep Singh, 34, was sentenced on Friday after being found guilty in February of two counts of rape, kidnap, false imprisonment and causing grievous bodily harm with intent following a trial at Isleworth Crown Court.
Under the sentence, Gagandeep Singh will serve 28 years in custody followed by a six-year extended licence period. He will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least 18 years, equivalent to two-thirds of his custodial term.
The court heard that the victim was abducted in June 2024 and taken to a property in Hanwell, west London, where she endured more than a day of physical and sexual abuse.
According to prosecutors, the woman became suspicious after being asked to transport a suitcase containing unknown items from Thailand to the United Kingdom. After she refused, masked men intercepted her upon her arrival at Birmingham Airport and forced her into a vehicle before driving her to London.
Once there, Gagandeep Singh raped her on two occasions and subjected her to severe violence. The victim was punched, beaten, stripped, whipped, burned and repeatedly assaulted before eventually being released. Her captors warned her not to tell anyone about what had happened.
Detective Constable Seetara Abdul, who led the investigation for the Metropolitan Police’s North West Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said the victim had shown extraordinary courage throughout the case.
“The brutality of what the victim in this case faced is unimaginable," Abdul said, adding, “She has shown immense bravery in coming forward and helping us ensure her attacker faces justice. The cruel level of control left her fearing for her life."
Police said the woman was initially reluctant to disclose the full extent of the abuse because of trauma and threats made against her.
“Threats were made to try and silence her, but the support of her mum and the diligent care shown by the officers investigating her case meant we were able to apprehend and charge an extremely dangerous individual," Abdul said.
