An Indian-origin man in the United States may face deportation after a purported video featuring him dancing at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, went viral online, drawing widespread criticism and capturing the attention of the concerned authorities.

The clip posted on TikTok features the man — identified as Madhu Raju — performing a choreographed dance routine at the National World War II Memorial on the National Mall, alongside a woman who is also seen dancing with him. However, the identity of the woman is yet to be ascertained.

The memorial honours the 16 million Americans who were parts of the armed forces during the World War II as well as more than 4,00,000 troops who died in the conflict.

NETIZENS REACT

The video triggered a massive controversy with netizens criticising the act, calling it disrespectful to a site associated with the sacrifice of soldiers.

“My grandfather was one of them, and he took a bullet in his leg. The DC WW2 Memorial is a place of remembrance, not a TikTok set," one user pointed out.

Another user wrote, “Anyone aspiring to go abroad must be subjected to a year-long compulsory intensive course in etiquette and civic education with a test at the end of it before leaving India."

Many sided with the man dancing at the memorial, saying it reflects the celebration of India’s culture. “It’s a beautiful reminder of how our diaspora carries joy and resilience, even in challenging times. Celebrating our culture abroad is a testament to our strength as a community", one user wrote.

Another user asked, “What law they broke making a reel?"

IMMIGRATION SCRUTINY

The incident has drawn scrutiny from the US Immigration authorities, who are examining whether the act could affect Raju’s visa status, according to an India Today report.

Under US immigration law, visa holders can face revocation of their status if they are found guilty of certain offences or engage in conduct considered in violation of the terms of their stay.

While dancing itself is not an offence, performing activities at federal monuments without permission can count as an offence.
